SAN DIEGO: New research boosts hope that a highly anticipated, experimental class of cholesterol drugs can greatly lower the risk for heart attacks, death and other heart-related problems. The US government will decide this summer whether to allow two of these drugs on the market. 

People taking one of these drugs had half the risk of dying or suffering a heart problem compared to others who were given usual care typically one of the statin drugs such as Lipitor or Zocor, doctors found. Many people cannot tolerate statins or get enough help from them, so new medicines are badly needed.

Scientists crack a great mystery: Why do cats love sleeping in cardboard boxes?

Scientists may have cracked the answer to one of the great mysteries of the animal kingdom: why do cats sleep in cardboard boxes? 

Anyone who lived with a cat has probably come home to find their feline companion sleeping in a strange place. Carelessly discarded cardboard boxes are as good as any. 

According to a series of scientific studies collated by the website Wired, there are two broad reasons why felines crave their own little cardboard castles. 

The reasons are primarily that boxes provide shelter from stress, and that they keep cats warm. 

According to a study conducted at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, boxes make cats less stressed because they are less likely to be pestered when hiding in them. 

In the wild these small hiding places would have been a place to relax away from prey, but in a modern home puss is more likely to be avoiding an unwanted stroke from an owner. 

Alternative places cats can hide include under tables and chairs, where they can't be annoyed or pestered. 

Another set of research conducted in 2006 by the National Research Council found that boxes can help keep a cat warm. 

Cardboard boxes are usually made of multiple layers of card to provide strength, which makes them a good insulator for cats trying to keep out of a cold draught. 

The animal psychology behind keeping warm in a box is similar to why cats sleep on cushions or why they like to lie in the sun rather than the shade. 

So next time you see your cat chilling in a cardboard box, there's a good chance they probably don't want anything to do with you but wish you would turn the heating up.

China opens grand canal to divert water to its arid northern part

BEIJING: China's decades old project of diverting river water from one end to the other saw the light of day on Friday. A key section of the massive $62 billion project meant to transport water from central and southern China to the arid north, including Beijing, was thrown open.

The section will feed 100 million people in the cities of Beijing, Tianjin and nearby provinces after bringing in an average 9.5 billion cubic meters—one-sixth of the volume of the giant Yellow River—of water. The water canal is 1,432km-long beginning at Danjiangkou reservoir in central China's Hubei province.

The project was first proposed during the period of former Communist Party leader Mao Zedong in the 1950s. The goal is to provide water to 300 million people in China's parched and pollution-ridden north. At least 20 major cities will be covered by the project.

HYDERABAD: From tip-toeing to the Begumpet airport and watch an aircraft fly past to bringing about a revolution in aerodynamics, this Osmania University alumnus dared to pursue his dream and bring rare laurels to his city.

After 20 years of intense research, which was funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) and the US Air Force, Sridhar Kota, an OU gold medalist, has built a shape changing flap for aircraft wings, which aeronautical experts worldwide have said will bring down jet fuel costs by up to 12% and reduce noise during take off and landing by a staggering 40%.

Settled in Michigan now, Kota, son of KV Subrahmanyam, a retired Indian Airlines employee, said he was proud to have achieved his dream, once Nasa recognized it and termed his creation as a "revolutionary wing" on its website.

"I had the privilege (for a middle class family in the 1970s) to fly when I was young, because my father used to get two free tickets per year as an employee of Indian Airlines. That certainly catalyzed my fascination with airplanes," Kota told TOI on telephone from Michigan.

Kota developed the prototype wing in his garage, which he showcased to Nasa and the air force.

"I have been fascinated by machines, motion, mechanisms, and anything that moves — and yes aircraft always fascinated me and they still do," said 55-year-old Kota, the youngest of six siblings, who grew up in Secunderabad's Shivaji Nagar.

The new wing was fitted to a Gulfstream business jet aircraft on November 6 and flown successfully by the US Air Force and Nasa, after FlexiSys, a company set up by Kota in 2001 developed it. Nasa and the US Air Force had pumped in over $ 40 million to aid FlexSys's research, Kota said.

Kota, who migrated to the USA in 1984 to do his MS, graduated from OU's mechanical engineering department in 1980.

Describing his journey to the USA and his research as very eventful, Kota said he wanted to invent the flap as he was interested in nature's flexible shapes. When he contacted the US Air Force with a design for flexible wing about 20 years ago, he was surprised to get a warm welcome.

"I was told that the Air Force, Nasa, aircraft manufacturers and researchers around the world have been working to come up with a practical design to change the shape of the wing in flight for decades! They immediately saw the benefits of my compliant design approach - lightweight, no moving parts, durable, robust and its ability to change its shape on demand," he said.

After it was tested and proved effective, several aircraft manufacturing units have expressed their interest in using the newly invented wing, Kota said during the telephone conversation.

His teachers, who are all retired, still have fond memories of their student. "He was a quiet, but brilliant student. I remember him as a smart and very efficient person. We all knew he would go a long way," said retired Prof V S Vishnu Botla, who taught Kota in OU.

In the US, Kota bagged two MS degrees from two different universities and he was awarded a PhD by University of Minnesota. He currently has 25 patents under his name and is now Herrick Professor of mechanical engineering in University of Michigan. He has also served in the White House as assistant director for advanced manufacturing.

His brother K Nageshwar, who is also an inventor, said Kota showed promise since his childhood.

"Some boys in the university wanted to prevent him from writing his final year B Tech examination as they did not want him to score the top rank. I used to double up as a guard for him, picking and dropping him at the university," Nageshwar, who is based out of Chennai, said.

The OU alumnus could be coming to the city in January 2015 to deliver an expert lecture in mechanical engineering department of OU. "We are proud of his achievement. At a time when OU is celebrating its Platinum Jubilee, we will be proud to have him among our midst," said Sriram Venkatesh, HoD, mechanical engineering, OU.

OBESITY REDUCES OUR LIFE EXPECTANCY

TORONTO: Being overweight or obese may decrease life expectancy by up to 8 years, a new study has warned. The research led by investigators at Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) and McGill University in Montreal examined the relationship between body weight and life expectancy. The findings show that overweight and obese individuals have the potential to decrease life expectancy by up to 8 years. 

The study further demonstrates that when one considers that these individuals may also develop diabetes or cardiovascular disease earlier in life, this excess weight can rob them of nearly two decades of healthy life. The analysis showed being obese at a young age was more damaging to health and life expectancy. The team, at the University of Montreal in Canada, said heart problems and type 2 diabetes were major sources of disability and death. 

"Our team has developed a computer model to help doctors and their patients better understand how excess body weight contributes to reduced life expectancy and premature development of heart disease and diabetes," said lead author Dr Steven Grover, a Clinical Epidemiologist at RI-MUHC. Grover and his colleagues used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (from years 2003 to 2010) to develop a model that estimates the annual risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease in adults with different body weights. This data from almost 4,000 individuals was also used to analyse the contribution of excess body weight to years of life lost and healthy years of life lost. 

In comparison with 20 to 39-year-olds with a healthy weight, severely obese men of the same age lost 8.4 years of life and women lost 6.1. Men also spent 18.8 more years living in poor health while women spent 19.1 in that state. 

Moving up an age group to those in the forties and fifties, men lost 3.7 years and women 5.3 years to obesity. Men and women in their sixties and seventies lost just one year of life to obesity, but still faced seven years in ill health. 

In addition, healthy life-years lost were two to four times higher for overweight and obese individuals compared to those who had a healthy weight, defined as 18.5-25 body mass index (BMI).

Bengaluru fuels India's nano strides: Scientists

ENGALURU: Proud that India is ranked third in the globe for its achievements in nanotechnology, noted scientist CNR Rao, considered a pioneer in the field, said the country will lead the sector with many more innovations, and that Bengaluru will be India's address. 

Stuart Parkin, German physicist and director of Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, acknowledged Rao's observation, saying: "The kind of instruments used and papers produced in Bengaluru in this field are truly world class." 

Both were speaking at the inauguration of the 7th Bangalore India Nano on Friday. 

There is, in fact, a lot of work happening in this field in Bengaluru. Only last week, a team of IISc scientists made public a discovery that nanowires made of a specific compound (vanadia) can reduce cell damage in the human body which otherwise leads to disorders. 

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research is working on a series of things, ranging from materials like graphene to nanotubes. Prof Upadrasta Ramamurthy, who researches in several Bengaluru labs, is credited to be the first to demonstrate extraordinary synergy in terms of mechanical property enhancement using more than one nanocarbon. 

Prof Rao himself is leading a team of scientists working on artificial photosynthesis, the end goal of which is to produce hydrogen, which scientists worldwide believe is the future of energy. "...Our endeavor through this nano project is to imitate ,nature and we're making considerable progress. The future bikes and planes will run on hydrogen and we are glad the work on it is happening here," said Prof Rao.

Problems delay Nasa’s deep space Orion launch

Wind gusts and sticky fuel valves conspired to keep Nasa's new Orion spacecraft on the launch pad on Thursday, delaying a crucial test flight meant to revitalize human exploration. 

Nasa promised to try again Friday morning. 

The space agency's new countdown clock got a workout as problem after problem cropped up in the final four minutes, and the count switched back and forth. 

A stray boat in the launch-danger zone kicked things off badly. Then excessive wind twice halted the countdown, followed by valve trouble on the unmanned Delta IV rocket that could not be fixed in time. Declining battery power in the rocket's video camera system reinforced the decision to quit for the day. 

Orion is how Nasa hopes to one day send astronauts to Mars. This inaugural flight, while just 4 hours, will send the unmanned capsule 3,600 miles (5,800 kilometres) into spView image on Twitterace

Sleep protein protects from cancer


WASHINGTON: A new protein responsible for regulating the body's sleep cycle, or circadian rhythm, also protects the body from developing sporadic forms of cancers, new research has found. 

Thus, people who work round-the-clock, could in fact be setting themselves back. 

"The protein, known as human period 2, has impaired function in the cell when environmental factors, including sleep cycle disruption, are altered," said Carla Finkielstein from College of Science, Virginia Tech. 

The new human period 2 protein if unaltered directly interacts with tumour suppressor proteins in cells to control cell division. 

"When (human period 2 protein) is non-functional because it is either mutated or somehow modified, then, it is unable to do its job and prevent the cells from dividing at certain times of the day," said Tetsuya Gotoh, research scientist, College of Science, Virginia Tech. 

"This is particularly a problem in cases where tumour suppressor genes are mutated as it happens in over 80 per cent of all cancer cases," said Gotoh. 

By studying human and animal tumour cells, the team found that repressing the human period 2 gene led to both abnormal circadian rhythmicity and a malignant transformation. 

Now, researchers are trying to find out if the malfunctioning of the protein and the gene that produces it leads to cancer. 

The results of these studies will help develop new, more effective prevention strategies for people at risk due to circadian disruption, such as women working in night shifts. 

"These findings highlight the complexity of the circadian-controlled network and emphasize its physiological relevance for human health and for new therapeutic interventions," said Finkielstein. 

The study appeared in the journal Molecular Biology of the Cell.

APPLE PHONES ARE MORE PROTECTIVE


NEW DELHI: Apple has been granted a patent to minimize the damage on an iPhone or iPad in case of an inadvertent fall, also protecting screen from cracking in the process.

As per the patent granted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), Apple has devised a system wherein a device can automatically re-orient itself by changing the angle of its eventual impact with the ground.

Apple's patent filing describes a device "comprising of a motion sensor and a processor that detects when the electronic device is in freefall based on information from the motion sensor." It also claims that the processor will be able to "alter the centre of mass of the electronic device by moving the mass in the protective mechanism in response to detecting the freefall of the electronic device."

Basically, it means that if an iPhone slipped from the hand and was about to fall flat on its screen, with the risk of a crack, the device would be able to change its orientation mid-fall, such that it drops on its side or the back.

This technology may be implemented in upcoming models as it is widely regarded that Apple is looking a way to avoid cracking the screen of iPhones and iPads when they fall. It was rumoured that the company is looking to put sapphire screen on iPhones, but that plan has seemingly died with the bankruptcy of GT Advanced.
